SPAC (Special Purpose Acquisition Company)

A SPAC is a publicly listed shell company that raises cash to merge with a private company, taking it public through the merger instead of a traditional IPO. The 2020-2021 SPAC boom took hundreds of venture-backed companies public, and the subsequent performance was largely brutal. SPACs remain a viable if scrutinized path for companies that want public currency with a negotiated valuation.
