Fund Life

Fund life is the contractual duration of a closed-end venture fund, typically ten years with one or two one-year extensions. Capital is deployed in the first years, and the back half is spent supporting the portfolio and waiting for exits. In practice venture funds regularly outlive their stated term because startups take longer than a decade to reach liquidity, which is one force behind the growth of secondaries and continuation funds.
