Unicorn

A unicorn is a private, venture-backed company valued at $1 billion or more, a term coined by Aileen Lee in 2013 when such companies were genuinely rare. The label describes a paper valuation, not an outcome — plenty of unicorns have exited below their peak marks. For a fund, what matters is not whether a portfolio company is a unicorn but what your ownership stake is worth at exit.
