Power Law
The power law is the empirical reality that venture returns are driven by a tiny number of outliers: in most good funds, one or two companies return more than everything else combined. Its implication is that fund strategy is outlier strategy — every check must be capable of returning the fund, and reserving into safe, modest outcomes is a quiet way to lose. It is the single most important concept in venture portfolio construction.
