Loss Ratio

Loss ratio is the share of a fund's invested capital (or company count) written off or marked below cost. Early-stage portfolios routinely see a third to half of companies fail — that is the model working, not breaking, provided winners are big enough. A suspiciously low loss ratio at seed can actually be a red flag: it suggests the manager isn't taking enough risk for the power law to pay.
