Vintage Year

A fund's vintage year is the year it begins investing (or holds first close), and it anchors benchmarking. LPs compare funds against peers of the same vintage because entry valuations and exit markets vary enormously by cycle — 2021 vintages faced very different math than 2009 vintages. A strong fund in a brutal vintage says more about a manager than a decent fund in an easy one.
