Distribution

A distribution is cash or stock the fund returns to LPs after an exit — an acquisition, a secondary sale, or selling public shares after an IPO lockup expires. Distributions drive DPI, the metric LPs care most about when deciding whether to re-up. Venture funds can also distribute shares in-kind after an IPO, leaving the sell decision to each LP.
