Follow-On

A follow-on is any investment into an existing portfolio company after the initial check, usually by exercising pro rata in the next round. Follow-ons are how a fund defends or concentrates ownership in its emerging winners, and how it burns reserves on its losers if it isn't honest. The follow-on decision is the purest test of a manager's judgment because it comes with more information and more bias than the first check.
