Reserves
Reserves are the portion of a fund held back for follow-on investments in existing portfolio companies, commonly 30-50% of the fund for funds that follow on at all. Reserve strategy is where portfolio construction gets hard: dollars reserved into a company that later stalls would have compounded better in a new initial check. The best practitioners re-underwrite each follow-on as if it were a fresh deal instead of defaulting to pro rata everywhere.
